Platformly allows you to create and use both segments and tags. Not sure what those are and how to use them? This short article will help you get a better understanding and benefit from these simple yet powerful features.


Segments are like lists. For example, if you run a SaaS or another type of subscription-based business, you could have the following segments:

Active Members
Cancelled Members
Refunded Members

If an active member cancels his subscription, he could be automatically moved from the "Active Members" segment to the "Cancelled Members" segment. If he is refunded, he could be automatically moved to the "Refunded Members" segment.

Segments, as the name suggests, allow you to segment your audience and deliver personalized experiences. For example, you could set up an email sequence for your active members, another one for your cancelled members and so on.

To create a segment, go to Contacts => Segments => New Segment


Tags are for extra information regarding your contacts. For example, if you sell different products, you could have the following tags:

Product #1
Product #2

If a "Product #1" owner buys "Product #2", he could then have both the “Product #1” and “Product #2” tags. If it’s an upgrade or downgrade, the “Product #1” tag could be replaced by the “Product #2” tag or, like for products, he could have both tags. This is up to you.

Let's imagine you want to promote "Product #2" to "Product #1" owners, you could send a broadcast email to the "Active Members" segment, to contacts who have the "Product #1" tag and not the "Product #2" tag.

Tags are like another layer of segmentation. They allow you to further segment your audience and deliver even more personalized experiences.

Those are just basic examples. There are of course plenty of other, different ways to use segments and tags. You are only limited by your imagination.

To create a tag, go to Contacts => Tags => New Tag
